Creative Thinking for Designers

Task 1 - Waste to Wealth

Create a permanent and workable art for your current allocated studio space

We were required to create a object/art piece/ artwork that can be used and shared by others. However that piece must be somehow related to my majoring subject which is Animation.

After sometime of thinking and planning I've created an idea for the task which is the combination of a drawing board and a canvas stand

The idea comes from watching the Disney animators clips where they show children how to draw some of the characters in the Disney world, they use a standing drawing board instead of a table and they have the papers hanging like how a canvas is on a stand.

With a little more of thinking, a light source is added to the stand as a secondary functionality for the object
(The light source is under discussion whether to add or not, due to my lack of electronic skills)

The artwork are influenced by a few objects like

A Canvas Stand

Light Box (for drawing)

Plastic Bottle Pencil Case

and finally,

Light Source

Task 2 - Decision

In this task, I have to analyze the idea in Task 1 and decide on the materials and how will it work and such.

In the end I chose to use Wood and Plastics as materials to create the artwork and with a little help of nails and other tools to make it workable.

I've separated the parts of the artwork and named them accordingly and will fix them up one by one instead of doing the whole thing from scratch. Like I said before the light source is an optional functionality that will or will not be installed depends on my skills with electronics, wiring and such.

The main functionality of the artwork is the board for drawing

This part is mostly influenced by the Light Box

Whereby artist, animators puts papers and draws upon, but instead of having the light underneath the light is outside and is movable.

The secondary functionality is the pencil case where the artist can put in the pencils, pens, brushes, or even charcoal.

Pretty much similar to just a mug holding fork, knifes and spoons, the plastic bottles serves as the mug and the utensils are the fork and spoons.

The main idea of this artwork is that it doesn't required the artist to move from place to place between drawing utensils and the drawing paper.

In this artwork everything you need is there.

Optionally there is also a light source whereby the artist can use to create an additional light or give lighting when the artist feel is not enough

The idea of the light source is that this is a board where the artist draws characters, or sketches some ideas or props

Task 3 - Getting to Work

The process of creating the artwork itself:

The artwork is created using wood, recycled wood

The flatbed for the paper

After gathering the items for the project, I went to putting them together with nails

Right after the nailing is complete, I've began the string holding part using wires as ropes/strings

With this the structural part of the project is complete and I moved on to the flatbed itself. Using manila card to make a smooth surface from the wood and spray paint to stick it

After the card is stuck, I've begin to nail down the paper clippers

And then I put the two piece together

This is the basic structure and the basic form of the project now moving on the extra aesthetics

First, the tray

With the tray done, it's time for the bottles/container for the drawing/painting utensils

With this I have done everything the project is completed, however I added something that was not planned in the idea sketching. Which is was a self draining water container

When filled with water, the user can use this as the water for painting

And when the water is no longer useful, all he need is to open the cap and the water will flow out

Finally the project is DONE

Add a little finishing of yellow paint
